If you didn’t need sleep, what would you do with all the extra time?

An essay exploring insomnia as a space for introspection, creativity, and nocturnal rituals.

The Gateway of Night
Insomnia is not merely the absence of sleep, but a peculiar state between worlds. You lie in bed, your body longing for rest, yet your mind races into endless landscapes. In these moments, the night becomes a mirror – reflecting fears, desires, and unspoken questions.

Dialogue with the Mind
When I can’t sleep, I start to converse with myself. Thoughts return to the past, to unfinished stories, to people who stay only in memory. Sometimes the future opens up—plans, dreams, possibilities waiting to unfold. This inner dialogue is sometimes heavy, sometimes liberating.

Rituals of Wakefulness
Sleeplessness demands its own rituals. Some count sheep, others turn to music, meditation, or writing. I often write down the thoughts that arise. It’s as if the night were a secret archive. This is where ideas are born. These small rituals transform restlessness into creativity.

Between Dream and Reality
When I can’t sleep, I find myself in a space that is not fully real. It is also not entirely dreamlike. Boundaries dissolve. I hear sounds that would vanish in daylight—the whisper of wind, distant footsteps, the ticking of a clock. This state reminds me that wakefulness and sleep are two faces of the same experience.

Insomnia as Teacher
Insomnia teaches me patience. It teaches me to accept that not everything can be controlled. Sleep is a gift that arrives when the time is right. When it does not, I have an opportunity to know myself differently. I find myself in silence, in restlessness, and in openness to the night.

The Gift of Silence
When I can’t sleep, I learn to transform darkness into a space for creativity. I learn to listen to my thoughts, to embrace silence, and to seek meaning within it. And finally, when sleep does come, it arrives as a reward. It feels like a gentle embrace of the night. The night first tested me, then bestowed peace.
